‘Tis the Season for Social Distance: How to Celebrate the Holidays in 2020

December 23, 2020

Whether it feels like it or not, the holidays are here! For some, the holidays are a sad and lonely time while for others, they are the greatest time of year. This year especially it seems as though the holidays are either a great escape from 2020 mayhem or the bitter end to a terrible year. However you’re feeling, it is valid and there are ways to tailor the season to either mood.

If it’s turning out to be a blue blue Christmas, you are not alone. Here are a few things you can do this holiday season to raise your spirits and connect with others.

  • #AerieREAL Kind Hotline – Call 1-844-KIND-365 for positive messages and love from the Aerie family.
  • Write cards to loved ones – Although you may not be in the holiday spirit, showing gratitude to others is a great way to boost your mood, and connecting with loved ones through the power of words will help you to feel less alone.
  • Video call with the people you are missing – The safest way to connect this holiday season. Whether it is FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, or Google Hangout. Pick your platform and call up the fam!
  • Interact with an online community – Find a Facebook group of people with common interests and hobbies as you. Maybe you have a favorite YouTube family (mine is Eamon and Bec) or Instagram influencer, connect with the community that supports them.

Maybe you’re more like me and Christmas is your favorite time of year! Although it’s a bit weird and different this year, it can still be as magical and exciting as ever. Here are some ways to celebrate:

  • Drive-thru light show – A safe and warm option for enjoying the sights of the season. If you can’t find a light show near you, just drive around town and see how your neighbors and local businesses decorate.
  • Stream allll the Christmas movies – You can even do a Netflix party with some friends and family so you can all watch movies together.
  • Decorate all the rooms in the house – Heck, order yourself some new decorations too. Visiting your friends and family to see their festive homes may not be an option this year so there is no shame in compensating for the loss with extra decorations in your home!
  • Listen to Christmas music – And sing it loud for all to hear…duh!

Regardless of what feelings this season brings, 2021 will be here before we know it. Take the time to address your feelings and don’t feel guilty for them! Despite the crappy year it’s been, you are allowed to rejoice and celebrate the holiday season. Despite the lights and joy around you, you are allowed to feel mournful and exhausted. We have made it this far my friends, congratulations and happy holidays.
